History

Its true origin is steeped in mystery, but legend speaks of its ability to grant great magical power to whoever wields it. The head of the spear contains an aperture, which fits a special red gemstone. The full power of the spear cannot manifest unless the gemstone is secured within its housing.

Centuries ago, the spear was separated from the gemstone and both artifacts were lost for ages. In recent years, the spear resurfaced and was placed in the care of Dr. Arnold Kaua, curator of the Hawaiian Historical Museum. Kaua regarded the spear as the most important historical artifact in the history of Hawaiian culture. In an effort to maintain the preservation of the spear, he asked the young super-hero, Superboy, to safeguard its display case at the museum. No sooner did Superboy agree to assist Dr. Kaua, than the super-powered villain known as Knockout broke into the hall in an effort to steal the spear. In truth, Knockout had little interest in the weapon itself, preferring instead to test her fortitude against Superboy. The two powerhouses fought one another causing massive property damage to the museum and the surrounding area. Knockout eventually overwhelmed Superboy, when a strange mystic known only as the Scavenger arrived and made off with the spear.

When Superboy revived, he embarked upon a quest to track down the spear's sister component – the mystic gemstone. His journey took him to a dormant volcano on the island of Maui. Superboy discovered a hidden cave, concealed behind a waterfall. Venturing inside, he found the Scavenger surrounded by a pile of human remains. Both adversaries fought one another, until a stray mystic blast tore through a section of rock unveiling the hidden gemstone. Taking possession of the stone, the Scavenger placed it within the spear's aperture awakening its full power. Superboy lunged at him and used his tactile telekinesis to shake the gemstone from its housing, where it subsequently fell into a riverbed of lava. Scavenger realized that he could not conquer Superboy without the full strength of the spear and executed a hasty retreat. Superboy recovered the spear and returned it to the museum.

Powers

The Spear of Lona possesses a variety of mystical properties, most of which remain shrouded in mystery and legend. To date, there has only been one documented demonstration of the spear's capabilities. A person wielding a fully empowered spear can create a circle of protection by drawing a line in the ground with the spear's tip. The strength and duration of this protection circle has never been measured.

Trivia
