History

New Earth

When the Manhunters suffered a simultaneous glitch, they all came to the same the conclusion: the only way to maintain order is to terminate all organic life. The Manhunters then descended upon the worlds of Sector 666. One of these was the world of Ryut. In what became known as the Massacre of Sector 666, the Manhunters slaughtered every living being they could find. Although the Guardians of the Universe managed to defeat the Manhunters before they could move to another sector, the damage was already done: only five beings survived the Massacre. These beings, demons of great power and evil, became the Five Inversions, vowing to see that the Guardians would see justice for allowing the Manhunters to attack Sector 666. They abandoned their home sector and made their base Ysmault in Sector 2814. Ryut and the other worlds of Sector 666 became abandoned.

Following the war between the Green Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps, the body of the Anti-Monitor, the Guardian of Fear, crashed on Ryut after being hurled through space by Superboy-Prime. An unknown entity observed the Anti-Monitor and commanded him to rise. To weak to resist or escape, the Anti-Monitor screamed in horror as a prison formed around him—in the form of a Black Lantern.[1]

Months later, the Green Lanterns Ash and Saarek, who had been assigned by the Scarred Guardian to locate the Anti-Monitor's body, made their way to Ryut, and discovered the Black Lantern, which Saarek dubbed the tomb of the Anti-Monitor. Ash attempted to find out where they were, but his Green Lantern Ring told him the location was classified. When he proved unable to contact the Scarred Guardian, Ash realized that something was wrong and attempted to drag the now-deaf Saarek away. As they started to leave, a pair of massive, decayed hands burst from the ground beneath the two Green Lanterns, reaching out for them, which leads to their deaths.[2]

During the Events of the Blackest Night the Black Lantern Central Power Battery was moved to Coast City, leaving Ryut apparently empty when Hal Jordan, Carol Ferris, Sinestro, Atrocitus, Agent Orange, Saint Walker, Indigo-1, Sayd and Ganthet arrived to battle the Black Lantern Corps.

Green Lantern

In a different continuity, Ryut was the planet where the Guardians imprisoned Parallax. To ensure the entity wouldn't escape, the Guardians prohibited any Green Lantern from entering that sector, dubbing it the Lost Sector. However, an encounter between the Honor Guard Green Lantern Tomar-Re and a terrorist caused a ship to crash land on the deserted planet.[3] Stranded, the survivors of the wreckage stumbled into Parallax's prison, awakening him. Parallax absorbed their fear, growing powerful enough to break free and threaten the universe once again.[4]
