The Battle of 7 Lantern Corps

An ancient prophecy from The Book of Oa where the seven colors of The Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum would be harnessed and used by the seven Lantern Corps, heralding The Blackest Night.

In The Beginning

It began eons ago, on the planet Maltus. There, the Maltusians, the oldest sentient race in existence, developed into a race of thinkers, eventually relocating to Oa, at the center of the Universe. In time, the Maltusians discovered the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum, harnessing the green light of willpower, and making the Green Lantern Central Power Battery. But one of the Maltusians, Krona, performed a forbidden experiment where he tried to witness the dawn of time. His device was struck by a blast of energy which caused the infant universe to begin multiplying into an infinite number of universes, a multiverse. However, Krona also caused the creation of the Anti-Matter Universe, and with it the Monitor, born on the moon of Oa, and the Anti-Monitor, born on the moon of Qward. After banishing Krona, the Maltusians decided to bring order to the universe and combat evil as penance for their sin of inaction. However, the Maltusians soon encountered a demonic parasite named Parallax, the sentient embodiment of fear. Unable to destroy Parallax, the Maltusians sealed him in the Central Power Battery. They decided that they would have to suppress emotions to avoid allowing them to cloud their judgment, but a group of females called Zamarons declared that "life without love is blasphemy". Unable to reconcile their differences, and since they were immortal at this point, the males and females split. The male Maltusians became the Oans, dedicated to combating evil.

At first, the Oans developed a race of robots known as the Manhunters, who would be free of emotions which would cloud their judgment. However, as the Manhunters couldn't understand emotions, they also couldn't understand motivations, seeing only legal and illegal instead of good and evil. Finally, the breaking point came when the Manhunters suffered a simultaneous glitch: the only way to maintain order is to exterminate all life. The Manhunters descended on Sector 666, killing all lifeforms they encountered. Although the Oans were able to stop the Manhunters before they spread to another sector, the damage was done: all but five beings died in the Massacre of Sector 666. Afterwards, a debate begin among the Oans. It was clear that a sentient force would be needed to patrol the universe, but one faction believed that evil should be destroyed outright, while another believed that evil should merely be stopped. The more aggressive faction left Oa, becoming the Controllers, who developed the Darkstars and the Sun-Eaters. The Oans who remained became the Guardians of the Universe. After a short lived force known as the Halla, the Guardians formed the Green Lantern Corps, a force which would use power rings fueled with the green light of will, charged by Power Batteries connected to the Central Power Battery. However, Parallax's presence in the battery caused a Yellow Impurity, where the rings were unable to affect anything yellow.

But the Guardians still had another threat. The five survivors, driven by a rage over the losses they had suffered and destruction they had witnessed, formed a sect known as the Five Inversions, dedicated to destroying the Guardians for unleashing the Manhunters. The Five Inversions formed a domain known as the Empire of Tears, which spanned three galaxies. Using blood rituals, the Five Inversions discovered the Blackest Night, where by seven Lantern Corps, each harnessing the power of the Emotional Spectrum, would go to war in a conflict known as the War of Light, which would herald the coming of the Black Lantern Corps of William Hand, the antithesis of the Emotional Spectrum, a power which the Five Inversions sought to harness for themselves. The Guardians dealt with the demons themselves, imprisoning the Five Inversions and interdicting their capital of Ysmault. The Guardians also removed the history of the Massacre from the Book of Oa, never allowing the Green Lanterns to discover their failure.

The Prophecies of The Five Inversions

Qull's prophecy

During an attempt to rescue the survivors of an Ungaran ship that crashed on Ysmault, Abin Sur, the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, was forced to violate the ban which forbade Green Lanterns from entering Ysmault. When he entered the planet, he came into contact with the demons, who tempted him with knowledge and power, but Abin dismissed their offers. Finally, Abin came across the Five Inversions. Qull of the Five Inversions]] offered to answer whatever three questions he wished to know. Abin asked of the survivors, and Qull revealed that the only survivor was a young girl, not far from the Five Inversions' crucifixes. After rescuing the girl, Abin inquired on his fate, which said that he would die when his Green Lantern Ring failed him at a critical moment. Abin then asked the final fate of the Green Lantern Corps. Qull revealed to him the Cosmic Revelations, where the Empire of Tears would unite with the Qwardians, the Children of the White Lobe, and Ranx The Sentient City to destroy the Green Lanterns. The Daxamite Sodam Yat would struggle valiantly, but fall to the Lobespawn. Finally, Mogo would be destroyed when Ranx exploded a Blink bomb in his core. Abin rejected their tales as lies and left. Qull, however, knew that his prophecies had instilled Abin Sur with fear, and the Demons of Ysmault laughed for nineteen weeks straight.

Abin Sur visiting Ysmault

Eventually, Abin Sur began making more trips to Ysmault, using a ship to conserve ring energy, to learn more about the threat facing the Green Lanterns. It was there that Qull finally revealed to Abin Sur the Blackest Night. Realizing that Qull had revealed to much, Atrocitus, Master of the Five Inversions, ordered Qull to speak no more. Horrified, Abin Sur returned to Oa, where he told others of the Blackest Night. His friends Sinestro and Tomar-Re dismissed the prophecies as the lies of demons, and the Guardians ordered Abin Sur to speak no more of the Blackest Night. However, the Guardians seemed to take the Five Inversions' prophecies seriously, and placed the prophecy in the Book of Oa, preventing the Green Lanterns from accessing "Cosmic Revelations".

The Earthmen

Atroctius searching for the Black

In the years to come, Abin Sur would meet his fate: transporting Atrocitus to Earth to locate the source of the Black, Abin Sur was mortally wounded when Atrocitus escaped his confines. Crashing his ship in the desert outside Coast City, his ring selected Hal Jordan as his replacement. Hal would be mentored under Sinestro, who helped him defeat Hector Hammond, a scientist who gained telepathic and telekinetic abilities when he was exposed to a radioactive meteorite in Abin Sur's ship. Sinestro and Hal would soon reimprison Atrocitus, as he was attempting to kill young William Hand, the future criminal known as Black Hand and foretold source of the Black. But Hal, with the help of Katma Tui, would later expose Sinestro's order on Korugar as instilling fear into the Korugarans. Sinestro would be expelled from the Corps and banished to Qward, and Katma was selected to be the new Green Lantern of Sector 1417. In Qward, Sinestro met the Anti-Monitor and formed a Qwardian Power Ring, which used yellow energy, actually the yellow light of fear of the emotional spectrum. As time went on, two other Earthmen were recruited into the Corps, John Stewart and Guy Gardner. John and Katma would grow close, and eventually marry. But Hal would not know much peace. His lover, Carol Ferris, was selected to be the bearer of the Star Sapphire (Gem), a parasitic crystal which contained the violet light of love, cultivated by the Zamarons, who left Oa eons ago over the Guardians decision to suppress emotions. The gem took over Carol and caused several psychological problems for her, culminating in the murder of Katma Tui. Carol's relationship with Hal was never the same.

The Green Lanterns of Earth

In time, the Anti-Monitor would eventually try to consume the multiverse, but the Green Lanterns, along with the heroes of Earth, destroyed him in an event known as the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Sinestro was captured and placed within the Central Power Battery. Within the Battery, Sinestro would awaken Parallax, the yellow impurity in the Central Power Battery, and directed him toward Hal. When Cyborg Superman and Mongul destroyed Coast City in an attempt to tarnish the legacy of Hal's late comrade Superman, Parallax finally gained a real foothold in Jordan. It guided Hal to destroy the Green Lantern Corps, fighting his fellow Green Lanterns along the way, including his former trainer Kilowog and an energy replica of Sinestro. Finally, Jordan absorbed the energy in the Battery, kill all the Guardians save Ganthet, and free Parallax, who suppressed Ganthet's memories of him. Seeking someone to keep the green flame burning, Ganthet selected Kyle Rayner to became the last Green Lantern. His initial acquiring of the ring brought Kyle some grief, as his girlfriend, Alexandra DeWitt, was murdered by Major Force, sent by a rogue government agency to steal the ring. Hal would later be able to briefly overcome Parallax and die restoring the sun, becoming the host of The Spectre. After absorbing the remaining Green energy in the sun, coupled with a temporary merging with Ion, Kyle recharged the battery and restored the Guardians and Kilowog to life.

Rebirth of Hal Jordan and the Corps

Soon afterwards, Kyle learned the truth about Parallax, and Ganthet sent Kyle to reclaim his body while he moved to separate Parallax from Hal. At the same time, Parallax was gaining control over the Spectre, and he disintegrated Black Hand's right hand after he tried to steal an old power ring Hal had left with his old friend Green Arrow. Soon, the Spectre revealed Parallax's presence to Hal, who suppressed both minds, while Kyle Rayner told what he had discovered to Green Arrow. Sinestro then attacked Kyle and Green Arrow, to prevent from informing the other heroes of Earth as Parallax planned to destroy the planet. However, Parallax's revelation was his undoing. Now that he was aware of Parallax, Jordan, and with the Spectre's help, separated himself from Parallax, soon restored to life by Ganthet. After driving off Sinestro, Hal, Kyle, John, Guy, and Kilowog defeated Parallax and reimprisoned him in the Central Battery. Deciding that it was time, Ganthet aged the Guardians to adulthood and set about restoring the Green Lantern Corps. At the same time, Black Hand and Hector Hammond were experimented on by the Kroloteans, an alien race which tried to accelerate evolution. The Kroloteans gave Hand the ability to absorb the lifeforce of others to restore his severed hand, while Hammond's ability to speak was restored. Sinestro, however, bide his time and waited.

Sinestro Corps War

The first Corps rises.

Following the Infinite Crisis, the multiverse was reborn, and the Anti-Monitor with it. On Qward, Sinestro and the Anti-Monitor worked to build the Sinestro Corps, a force which would bring order to the universe by instilling fear. At the same time, the Cyborg Superman, now Grandmaster of the Manhunter Cult, learned of the multiverse. He was captured following Biot's destruction, and interrogated by the Guardians. Ganthet and another Guardian, Sayd, believed that the Blackest Night was coming to pass, but the Guardians exiled them from the Council. Kyle, who had been rebonded with Ion, was captured, separated from Ion, and made a host for Parallax. Hal Jordan and his fellow Earth Lanterns, John Stewart and Guy Gardner, went to Qward to rescue him, but were forced to leave with Ion. Knowing the prophecy, Sinestro allied with Ranx and the Children of the White Lobe, launched an attack on Mogo under his lieutenant Arkillo. Kilowog lead a counter-force, including a rookie Sodam Yat. Succumbing to fear, the Guardians rewrote the Book of Oa and authorized the Green Lanterns to use lethal force against the Sinestro Corps, which had been Sinestro's goal all along. Informed of their new abilities, a number of Green Lanterns began slaughtering the panicking Sinestro Corps, while Sodam Yat managed to destroy Ranx. The Sinestro Corps targeted Earth, but Jordan was able to free Rayner, and Parallax was imprisoned in the batteries of the Earth Lanterns by Ganthet and Sayd. The two told the Lanterns of the Blackest Night, then departed.

Sinestro defeated

During the battle, the Anti-Monitor was challenged by the Guardians, but he managed to burn one of the Guardians during their battle. He was injured when Stewart and Gardner threw Warworld, carrying the Qwardian Central Power Battery, on the Anti-Monitor, who was caught in the explosion. Superboy-Prime then betrayed the Anti-Monitor, and threw him across the universe. After the battle of Earth, Ganthet and Sayd decided to form the Blue Lantern Corps, which would aid the Green Lanterns by harnessing the blue light of hope. The Anti-Monitor landed on an unknown planet in Sector 666, where he was contained by an unknown force and placed with a Black Central Power Battery.

Aftermath of The War

Alpha Lanterns are born

Following the end of the Sinestro Corps War, the Guardians, under the leadership of the increasingly militant Scar, began to take steps they deemed necessary to prevent the Blackest Night. They extended the lethal force authorization to be used against all enemies of the Green Lantern Corps. Additionally, the Guardians established the Alpha Lantern Corps, an internal affairs force which would investigate the Green Lanterns. Although the Guardians said that those who accepted would have to leave behind their former lives and accept technological modifications to mainline them to the Book of Oa, they did not reveal the extent of their transformation: the Alpha Lanterns were modified to have aspects of the Manhunters, and their emotions were completely suppressed or stripped. Their first action was to expel Laira of Jayd over her murder of Amon Sur.

Unknown to the other Guardians, the Scarred Guardian had been corrupted by the Anti-Monitor's touch, and was now seeking to join the power behind the Black to bring about the Blackest Night. To that end, she assigned Ash to locate the Anti-Monitor's corpse, and Saarek to commune with the Anti-Monitor's spirit.

Mongul tending to his new form of Black Mercy

At the same time, Qwardian rings continued to seek out new bearers. One of these was Mongul II, the son of the Mongul who destroyed Coast City. He decided to take advantage of the power vacuum following the imprisoning of Sinestro and Parallax, and began a campaign to take control of the Sinestro Corps. Aware of the rings, the Guardians dispatched a team under Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner to send the rings to Oa. Kyle and Guy's team encounter Mongul on Ater Clementia, the homeworld of the Black Mercy, a type of plant Mongul I had used on Superman years earlier. Mongul underestimated the Green Lanterns, and was partially digested by Mother Mercy, the mother of the Black Mercies. Unknown to the Lanterns, Mongul fled, raiding the ship of newlywed couple Kered and Miri Riam, where he kill Kered.

Meanwhile, other Sinestros were attempting to spread fear by targeting the Lanterns families. Guy, Kyle, and Soranik Natu helped to neutralize the Quintet, a group of Sinestro Corps siblings attacking other families of Green Lanterns. At the same time, Rayner and Natu, who were growing closer, were drawn into KT21, Matoo and Amnee Pree's search for the Sinestro Kryb, who was murdering Green Lanterns and kidnapping their children.

In the run up to the event known as the Final Crisis, Black Hand was being transported to another facility when he experienced a sudden power surge. In an explosion, Hand was transported to the unknown planet in Sector 666, where he soon met the power behind the Black Battery.

Sins of The Star Sapphires

Mission to Zamaron

Following an encounter with Hal Jordan, Carol Ferris, and Jordan's new lover Jillian Pearlman, the Zamarons had realized that the Star Sapphire was too unstable for the host to control. Deciding to take a page from the Book of Oa, the Zamarons began splitting the crystals into Rings and Power Batteries to lessen the effect of control. The Guardians had been observing this for some time, and decided to take a diplomatic approach. The Scarred Guardian, however, was part of the mission, and made a diplomatic solution impossible. The Zamaron mission failure, coupled with the increasing attacks on Lantern families, allowed the Scarred Guardian to pass a new law to the Book of Oa, forbidding romantic relationships between members of the Green Lantern Corps.

The search for Kryb came to a head in Sector 1111, where Rayner's team located Kryb after murdering the Green Lanterns of the sector at their Sector House, and taking their child. Amnee was able to get the child out of Kryb's possession, but exposed her own pregnancy to Kryb. The other Lanterns made an assault on kryb, but the Sector House began to fall into the gravity of the planet. Seeing the late Lantern's body burn, an enraged Kyle Rayner unleashed a violent physical assault on Kryb. As his fellow Lanterns tried to restrain him, Kryb exposed the Lanterns to her own form of "breast milk", which contained controlling properties that made those exposed subservient to Kryb's will. Unaware of what had happened to them, Amnee went to rescue her husband and fellow Lanterns. Kryb prolonged the battle long enough to cause Amnee to go into labor, then used the Lanterns to restrain Amnee while Kryb performed a ceasarian section. However, Kyle Rayner was able to break free of Kryb's control, and purge the remaining mind control toxin from his fellow Lanterns. Kyle and KT21 dealt with Kryb while Matoo and Soranik helped Amnee through her labor.

Miri Riam becomes a Star Sapphire

Meanwhile, Miri Riam had nearly committed suicide over her grief. The love she felt for Kered attracted a Star Sapphire Ring, which offered to help fill the hole in her heart. Miri accepted, and traveled to Zamaron, where she was inducted into the Star Sapphire Corps. While on patrol, Miri learned of Kryb threatening Matoo and Amnee's love, and hurried to the planet. Her assistance helped to defeat Kryb, just as the Lanterns learned of the new romantic relationship prohibition. Fearful for her child, KT21 tried to execute Kryb on the spot, but Kryb killed her, though she was restrained by Kyle and finally encased in crystal by Miri. Miri announced that she was taking Kryb to Zamaron. Kyle and Soranik did not believe that this could work, as both had their doubts on love. Miri had them look inside her crystal to see their hearts desire, and they saw each other. Kyle left the decision with the Prees, who had decided to resign because of the new law, and chose to let Miri take Kryb. The Guardians were displeased with Kyle's actions, but they soon had other problems: within hours of the law's announcement, dozens of Green Lantern couples resigned in protest.

Rage of The Red Lanterns

Forging of the red battery

But the Guardians had left a loose end untended. On Ysmault, Atrocitus burned with rage over the massacre of Sector 666 and his reimprisonment by Sinestro. Atrocitus finally gave into his rage, tapping into the red light of rage of the emotional spectrum. Freeing himself and forging a Red Power Battery, Atrocitus used the battery to kill the other four Inversions, using their blood to form a Red Lantern Central Power Battery and Red Power Rings. Atrocitus began sending rings across the universe, one of which made its way to Laira. Once they were ready, the Red Lantern Corps launched an attack on the Green Lanterns transferring Sinestro to his execution on Korugar. They actually ended up ambushing the Sinestro Corps as well, who had been informed of Sinestro's transfer by the Scarred Guardian. Sinestro was captured, and many members of the Sinestro Corps were killed, while the Green Lanterns were left to die. Fortunately, they were saved by Saint Walker, the first of the Blue Lantern Corps, who had been dispatched to bring Sinestro and Hal Jordan to Ganthet. Taking Jordan to Odym, Saint Walker and Jordan observed the induction of Warth into the Blue Lantern Corps. Ganthet convinced Hal to help the Blue Lanterns rescue Sinestro, saying that both Hal and Sinestro would play a major role in the Blackest Night.

Blues Lanterns intervene

Traveling to Ysmault, Hal and the Blue Lanterns were attacked by the Red Lanterns, with the battle soon becoming a three way fight between the Hal and the Blue Lanterns, the Red Lanterns, and the Sinestro Corps, who had come to rescue Sinestro. During the battle, Hal Jordan managed to get through to Laira, getting her to see past her rage. Unfortunately, Sinestro then killed Laira, mocking Jordan for losing another one. In a rage, Jordan assaulted Sinestro, trying to kill him. His anger summoned forth a Red Power Ring, which attached itself to Jordan, making him a Red Lantern.

Trying to fight off the influence of the Red Ring, Hal Jordan attacked the Blue Lanterns and nearly killed Sinestro. Atrocitus then revealed the weakness of the blue light: it need the green light of willpower to make it work, and since Jordan's ring was inactive, the Blue Lanterns were effectively neutralized. Saint Walker then placed a Blue Power Ring on Jordan, which purged the rage from his body, restarted the blood replication, and assumed his heart functions, destroying the Red Power Ring. However, it also turned Jordan into a composite Blue/Green Lantern hybrid, something which also shocked Saint Walker. Meanwhile, on Earth, Carol Ferris was inducted into the Star Sapphires, whether willingly or not is unknown.

Hal as a Hybrid Lantern bests Atrocitus

In the chaos, Atrocitus fled to the other side of Ysmault, where he attempted to locate where the Blue Lantern Corps was located. Sinestro and his corps retreated to Qward, where Sinestro activated an ancillary Qwardian Central Battery, built in the event the Central Battery used in the Earth invasion was destroyed. Sinestro was also fully informed of Mongul's coup attempts and summoning of the Sinestro Corps to the planet Daxam. He dispatched his loyalists to rescue the female Sinestro Corps members on Zamaron, then meet on the darkside of Daxam's moon, while Sinestro went to investigate his daughter.

Avarice of The Orange Lanterns

With the Guardians and the Zamarons preoccupied with the other Lantern Corps, the Controllers were allowed complete freedom of movement from the only two groups which would stop their agenda. Following the Sinestro Corps War, the Controllers decided that they needed a power source similar to Green Lantern Central Power Battery, and agreed to seek out the orange light of avarice. Their search lead to the Vega Star System, a star system which was forbidden to the Green Lantern Corps, despite the militaristic designs of the Citadel. The Controllers made their way to Okaara, where they found evidence of the orange light had already be harnessed. Discovering the orange power battery deep within the caves of the planet, they tried to take the battery but the Orange Lantern Corps, a corps made up of all constructs, attacked from within the battery, murdering the Controllers.

Larfleeze angered by broken treaty

Meanwhile on Odym, Hal tried to get the Blue Lanterns to remove the blue ring from his hand. However, Ganthet revealed that Hal would have to use the ring to be able to take it off. Hal then left, in search of Sinestro and the Blue Lanterns decided to go in search of the indigo light as hope and indigo must work together in the war. In Space Sector 2828, Green Lantern Stel was chasing a Sinestro Corps member who fled into the Vega System. Soon after they entered the system however, a large Orange Lantern emerged from the darkness of space and consumed the Sinestro Corps member, stealing his yellow ring. The Orange Lantern then proceeded to brand Stel with the avarice symbol. The Guardians of the Universe brought Hal Jordan to Oa in an attempt to remove the blue ring, believing that Ganthet and Sayd had weaponized the power of hope to use against them. Their attempts to remove the ring were interrupted by a Green Lantern who brought in the branded body of Stel. From the avarice brand emerged a flaming image of the creature Larfleeze who now went by the name of Agent Orange. Believing that the Controllers were still associated with the Guardians, he made accusations at the Guardians saying that he ignored their travels into the Vega System to battle the Spider Guild and more recently, Mongul, but this time they had gone too far because they had spoiled his meal. He began to threaten them when the scarred Guardian destroyed the image, proposing that they enact a new law. That the Vega System was now no longer off-limits to the Green Lantern Corps.

Orange Lantern ambush

Now able to go freely into the Vega System, the Guardians, along with many Green Lanterns to aid them invaded the system, arresting thousands of known criminals who had been hiding there. Hal Jordan, who still was stuck with the blue ring, began to lose control of its power and crashed onto Okaara. The Corps followed closely behind and when they were about to travel into the caverns deep in the planet, they were ambushed by the Orange Lantern Corps. It was revealed during the battle that when an Orange Lantern killed someone, they consumed their ring and then stole their identity. The victim's image almost immediately became an orange construct, now a member of their Corps. In the middle of the fight, Hal was dragged underground by an unknown attacker. When he finally stopped falling he met the self-proclaimed owner of the Orange Lanterns, Larfleeze himself. Agent Orange demanded to know where Hal had gotten the blue ring, wanting something new after having consumed so many Green rings in the past. He discovered that the ring was full of hope and realized that it could be the one thing to quench his terrible hunger for all things he did not own.

Hope unleashed

Hal promised him a trade, saying that he would give Larfleeze the ring if he would tell about the deal he had made with the Guardians that had caused the Vega System to be off limits for centuries.

After telling Jordan his story of how the orange light came into his possession, Agent Orange attempted to steal the blue ring as Green Lantern was still unable to use its power. He removed Hal's hand, taking the ring for himself but quickly discovered it was all an illusion the blue ring had made, showing him his greatest hope. Meanwhile, John Stewart was confronted by a now Star Sapphire, Fatality. Who said that John should not blame himself for the destruction of Xanshi. Their fight continued, Larfleeze unleashing his Orange Lanterns on Hal who formed his own corps of constructs using his green power ring. The Guardians and their corps arrived to help Hal who figured out that it was the orange power battery that was powering the Orange Lanterns. He snatched the battery from Larfleeze, temporarily becoming engulfed by the orange light but Agent Orange immediately took it back from Hal. This enraged him even more and he used his full power against the Guardians. Finally, Hal managed to unleash the blue ring's power on Larfleeze. The ring then departed from his finger back to Odym. Agent Orange, angered by this forged a new treaty with the Guardians saying that if they told him where the blue ring went to, he would not battle with them anymore. And surely enough, mere hours after the fight on Okaara, the Orange Lanterns descended on Odym and the shocked Blue Lantern Corps.

The Fall of Daxam and The Riot on Oa

Heading to Daxam, Mongul managed to conquer the planet by himself, sending out an emergency beacon to all Sinestro Corps members to come to Daxam. Once a number of them arrived, Mongul announced that the Sinestro Corps would hereafter serve him, and only him. Arkillo, disdainful of Mongul's arrogance, challenged to single combat for leadership of the Corps. Although Arkillo dominated most of the battle, Mongul triumphed, ripping out Arkillo's tongue, leaving him to be "seen but not heard", a perfect reminder of his power. Sodam Yat's parents, knowing their son was a Green Lantern, sent his mother in the ship of a childhood friend Tessog, an alien who was murdered out Daxamite xenophobia. Yat, who had overcoming brainwashing his parents instilled to view Tessog as an enemy, was perfectly willing to let his world rot, only agreeing when he forced his mother thank Tessog's memory.

The sciencell riots

On Oa, Vice, one of the Red Lanterns, was captured and brought to the sciencells. Scar, knowing that this was a perfect opportunity to cut Oa in half, released him from his restraints and set him loose in the sciencells, which was housing dozens of captured Sinestro Corps members and Qwardian power rings captured by the Green Lanterns in recent months. Voz, the Green Lantern in charge of the Sciencells fought bravely, sustaining heavy injuries from Vice until the Green Lantern reinforcements arrived to help.

Meanwhile on Korugar, Sinestro visited Green Lantern, Soranik Natu, and revealed to her that he was actually her father. She did not believe him at first until he explained the truth behind the matter. He then left, warning her that the Red Lanterns knew of his daughter's existence. Sinestro then left to meet with his loyal corpsmen to free the captured female Sinestro Corps members on Zamaron.

Ion changes Daxam's sun

Back on Daxam, Sodam Yat and Arisia arrived to find the planet completely surrounded by an enormous snake-like minion of Mongul's. They managed to sneak by it and made it to the planet's surface. They found that many Daxamites were leaping off of a cliff to their deaths out of fear of the occupying Sinestro Corps. The Green Lanterns defeated a squad of Sinestro Corps members but Yat's abilities he had gained from the yellow sun completely dissipated due to Daxam having a red sun. Yat found his father and scolded him and the rest of the Daxamites for being such cowards.

Sodam then went off to confront Mongul, attacking him while the villain was in the middle of building of statue of himself. Yat held his own much better against Mongul than he had on the Mercy Planet but he found himself unable to tap into his full Ion power due to ring interference by the Guardians(unknown to him, only really Scar) but his ring told him that there were two ways he could tap into the entity's power. He could use someone else's energy as catalyst to trigger the Ion state or remove his ring which unfortunately would allow the lead poisoning he had suffered during his battle with Superboy Prime to spread. After trying the first option and realizing it wouldn't be able to beat Mongul, he removed his ring and blasted off into the sun, destroying the snake-like Sinestro Corps member entangling the planet. Once he was in the sun, his Ion powers were unleashed and he managed to turn the sun yellow, giving the Daxamites a fighting chance.

Phalanx Directive

Meanwhile, the riots on Oa were not going well. Sinestro Corps members now had their rings back while former incarcerated criminals retrieved weapons from where their artillery was being held. Guy Gardner managed to defeat many foes including disarming the bounty hunter, Hunger Dog before making an uneasy alliance with his old enemy Bolphunga the Relentless. Kyle Rayner also found himself in a similar situation, striking a deal with the criminal Kanjar Ro that he would be set free if he aided the Corps in stopping the riot. Sinestro Corps member, Lyssa Drak journeyed to the center of Oa in search of the Book of Parallax but instead stumbled upon the Book of Black. Scar found her snooping and vengefully trapped her inside of the book. Rookie Green Lanterns boldly tried to help in the battle but found themselves outmatched and nearly killed when three Alpha Lanterns arrived. Using the Phalanx Directive, the corps finally managed to trap the freed prisoners in a large construct orb. Scar deemed it time that Oa let itself be part of the rest of the black universe and made it so Oa's outer protective shell crumbled apart.

The Corps members all found themselves reacting in different ways to Oa now being out in the open. The Alpha Lanterns took the prisoners away, still trapped in the enormous emerald construct sphere. Meanwhile, Soranik Natu was still recovering from the discovery that Sinestro was actually her father. And on Daxam, Mongul found that the newly super powered Daxamites were turning out to be more trouble than he had expected. He quickly pulled the Sinestro Corps back and went into a full retreat. Back on Oa, Guy and Kyle were bringing the wounded, including Voz, to the med labs when they discovered that the Alpha Lanterns were beginning to execute the escaped prisoners one by one. The two Earthmen tried to intervene but learned that it was by the request of the Guardians that the prisoners be killed for their crimes. Kyle questioned the Alpha Lanterns on why the Guardians don't turn this into the 5th law, that the Corps no longer takes prisoners, and that it was probably because they were afraid to show the other Corps members what they were doing. The Guardians arrived, with many Green Lanterns, turning the executions into a public affair and Scar scolded Guy and Kyle for letting their emotions get in the way. Kyle and Guy had promised that Kanjar Ro and Bulthunga would not be punished due to helping them during the riots. The Guardians agreed to spare them but they carried out the rest of the executions, teleporting Guy and Kyle back to Earth to get better control on their emotions.

The Blackest Night

Death descends on the universe

The Guardian Scar finally made her move, after making contact with the Earthman, Black Hand, who had been attacked by Atrocitus long ago. Atrocitus had claimed that he was the source of the black and the person that was going to open the gates for the Blackest Night to spread across the Universe. Scar spoke psychically to William Hand, telling him to murder his family and then, himself. Once he was on the floor, bleeding, Scar arrived and coughed up a black power ring which immediately searched for flesh and put itself around Black Hand's finger. He rose up and Scar explained that he, like Ion, Parallax, and The Predator, was the entity of the black power. Death incarnate. Black Hand acknowledged this before deciding it was time to spread darkness across the Universe.

An enormous wave of Black Power Rings were then unleashed from within the Black Lantern's Central Power Battery in Space Sector 0666 while Black Hand robbed the unmarked grave of Bruce Wayne, taking the deceased Batman's skull. Meanwhile, on Oa, the Guardians watched the battles on Ysmault between the Lost Lanterns and Red Lanterns, the Blue Lantern Corps and Agent Orange on Odym, Mongul and the Sinestro Corps on Daxam, and the loyalists to Sinestro attempting to free their comrades who were captured by the Star Sapphires. This caused them to finally accept that the War of Light could not be prevented, as they had been trying to do by repressing emotion, but rather confronted. It was then that Scar revealed her true loyalty, slaughtering one Guardian and capturing the others. The Green Lanterns on Oa discovered that a cloud of Black Rings was descending on Oa and recruiting all of the fallen Lanterns in the crypts to their corps of death. The fallen Lanterns rose from the crypts, now Black Lanterns, ready to slaughter the corps they had died serving. Jade, who had risen on Earth and then traveled to Oa, immediately went after her former boyfriend, Kyle Rayner.

Hal meets his first Black Lantern

On Earth, while people celebrated all of the heroes who had died over the years, black rings came to the planet, recruiting formerly deceased heroes and criminals alike. Hal Jordan and Barry Allen, the Flash, went to Bruce Wayne's grave after learning of its mutilation. They were then ambushed by the now Black Lantern, J'onn J'onzz. Far way, Hawkman and Hawkgirl were ambushed by Black Lanterns Ralph and Sue Dibney who murdered them and tore out their hearts. Black Hand emerged from the shadows, still holding Bruce Wayne's skull. He used Wayne's skull to produce two Black Power Rings which transformed the pair of fallen heroes into Black Lanterns. Back in Gotham, Barry Allen and Hal Jordan confronted J'onn who attacked them in an attempt to rip out their hearts in a similar fashion to how Ralph and Sue Dibney attacked Hawkman and Hawkgirl. They fought across the city with J'onn having the upperhand, using his psychic abilities and his super strength.

John Stewart was visiting the remains of the planet Xansi, which he still felt guilty for failing to save it from destruction. He remembered what Fatality had told him about forgiving himself but as he was in deep thought, Black Power Rings came to the remains of the planet and flew through its debris, ordering it to rise. Back on Earth, Mera and Tempest prepared to bring Aquaman's body back into the ocean when they were ambushed by Black Lanterns Aquaman, Dolphin, and Tula. Tempest was overwhelmed by the attack and his heart was ripped out by Tula. He was then made into a new Black Lantern. Mera managed to escape her former allies. A Black Ring successfully recruited Hank Hall, the dead hero known as Hawk but failed to recruit his brother Dove, who the ring said was at peace so it could not recruit him. Crispus Allen was given a Black Power Ring and therefore the Spectre was trapped inside of his body, its power now used by its Black Lantern host. Back in Gotham, the fight with Martian Manhunter continued. Hal and Barry worked together to cause an explosion that would envelope their old teammate in his one weakness, fire. They thought it had worked until Martian Manhunter rose from the wreckage with other Black Lanterns like Ralph and Sue Dibney, Firestorm Ronnie Raymond, and Hawkman and Hawkgirl at his side.

Though the Black Lantern Corps was making its move, the War of Light was still raging throughout the universe. The Sinestro Corps members under Mongul's rule traveled to Korugar where he declared that their corps would now be known as the Mongul Corps. Meanwhile, on Zamaron, the Sinestro Corps was freeing the female Corps members who were being converted into Star Sapphires. The Sapphires were putting up a strong defense until Sinestro himself arrived on the battlefield. The trapped Corps members began to break free of their crystal prisons while Sinestro dueled Carol Ferris. She trapped him inside of a crystal, causing him to look deep into his past at his lost love who was revealed to be Arin Sur, Abin Sur's sister. Sinestro broke free in a violent rage, beating Carol and telling her that he is more concerned with the civil war with Mongul than the Sapphires. Tekik and another Sinestro Corps member held Carol and Sinestro was about to deal the final blow when a black construct of a hand tore through the Corps member's chest, ripping out his heart. Deceased Sinestro Corps members, who now wielded black rings, including Amon Sur, converged on the Sapphires and Sinestros. Amon revealed that Qward was under attack as well by Black Lantern Weaponers of Qward. On Ysmault, the Lost Lanterns continued their fight to get Laira's body off of the planet. The Red Lanterns fought viciously while Boodika murdered them without a second thought, her Alpha Lantern programming making her want to eliminate all of the Red Lanterns. Hannu attempted to take her off of the planet by force but was attacked by Atrocitus. Before Atrocitus could strike again, a sea of Black Power Rings came to the planet, recruiting the four dead of the Five Inversions and Laira. Larfleeze continued to watch the battle with the Blue Lanterns on Odym, excited by the mere thought of getting the blue power. Suddenly, his temple on Okaara was broken into by the black rings who recruited all of the dead beings that Larfleeze had made orange constructs out of. The Black Lantern victims of his surrounded him and he held on tight to his battery. Inside the Book of Black, Lyssa Drak could hear Scar speaking with her master about the war and how all of the Corps' homeworlds were under attack by their own Corps. They also discussed the Indigo Tribe who had yet to join the battle but Scar assured her master that when they did, they would fall like all of the others.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Barry Allen battled the group of Black Lanterns who had attacked them in Gotham. They were being overwhelmed by the Lanterns of death when Ray Palmer arrived, having shrunk down onto Hawkman's black ring. He was able to view the insides of the ring and discovered it was far different than the normal power ring. They were being beaten back when two members of the mysterious Indigo Tribe arrived, combining their powers of compassion with Hal's green light. This combination of powers managed to severe the connection of the black ring with both Ralph and Sue Dibney, causing the Black Lanterns to become corpses once more. She said that if any other emotional power was combined with willpower, the center of the spectrum, a Black Lantern could be killed. Indigo-1, the leader of the Indigo Tribe, informed Hal that he must come with their Tribe to recruit all of the other Corps' leaders in order to recreate the white light that was splintered into the emotional spectrum long ago.

She took Hal with her to Zamaron where Sinestro and Carol tried to defend themselves from the horde of Black Lanterns and with the help of Indigo-1 and Hal, managed to destroy a few, including Amon Sur. Sinestro confronted Hal over his interference but their argument was interrupted when two Black Rings suddenly flew into the Star Sapphires Central Power Battery, recruiting the corpses of the two lovers who had formed the violet heart, the source of love's power. The body's were revealed to be Hawkman and Hawkgirl's former selves in a previous life and with the heart now compromised, Zamaron began to erupt with power and Hal, Indigo, Sinestro, and Carol all fled, knowing that the violet light had been severely weakened. Indigo transported them to Korugar despite Sinestro's complaints. He questioned her on why she had brought him back to his homeworld when she suddenly teleported him away, explaining that fear was a power they needed on their side so he must face his rival. Sinestro found himself face to face with Mongul and the two fought over rule of the Sinestro Corps with Sinestro seemingly being beaten senseless by the alien warlord. However, Sinestro refused help from Hal and the others and revealed that he had set up a fail-safe mechanism in the yellow rings and activated it just when Mongul believed he was victorious. Yellow spikes shot through Mongul's body, bringing him to his knees in agony. To finish him off and cement his rule of his corps, Sinestro transported the Yellow Power Battery to Korugar and dropped it onto Mongul, trapping him inside to ensure that he did not die and become a Black Lantern. Sinestro explained that now that he had his corps back, he would lead the mission to destroying the Black Lanterns and fulfilling his old friend, Abin's quest but just as he did so, a black construct of a ship crashed down onto Korguar with both Abin Sur and his sister Arin inside, looking forward to killing Sinestro and Hal.
